About Betsy Bayliss

Hey there!  My name is Betsy Bayliss, currently a 21 year old senior at the University of Puget Sound majoring in English/Creative Writing with minors in Asian Studies and Religion.  Biking across the country has been one of my dreams for the past five years, and Bike the US for MS has given me the perfect opportunity to do something that I love (bike!) for a cause that is a personal one.  I am an active individual, and hopefully will always be.  I played soccer and fenced throughout high school, and I curently row for the University of Puget Sound.  Looking forward, my next pursuits are cyclocross and triathlons, not to mention law school in the fall.

The impacts that MS had on individuals and their loved ones is profound.  My mother had MS, and showed steadily worsening symptoms for almost all of my life until her death five years ago.  By the time I was in high school, she was almost completely confined to a wheelchair.  I've witnessed firsthand how much of a struggle daily life can become for individuals who suffer from MS, with the pain, physical disability, mental imparement, medicines, side effects, and the general difficulty of having to cope with extreme illness.  For my mom, and for everyone living with the effects of MS, those suffering from it or those who know someone who is, I am riding across the country for hope.

Being able to be a part of an effort like Bike the US for MS not only satisfies my love of sport, but also lets me look hopefully on the future of research for MS treatments and even a long-awaited cure.  The dedication to such a wothwhile cause by all of the riders and sponsors is truly amazing.  If you would like to be a part of this cause, you can donate in my name via the above box.  Donations go to the James Q. Miller MS Clinic in Charlottesville, VA, and are tax deductible.  You can even have your employer match your donation to double your impact on the fight against MS.  Join me in helping find a cure for MS!
