About Scott Duncan

Although I don’t have any direct connection with MS in my family, I feel that I have some small understanding of what people with MS must go thru.  Three years ago, I had major knee surgery, was on crutches for almost three months, and then went thru a long period of rehabilitation.  I couldn’t do a lot of things, and I had to constantly ask for help.  I couldn’t use this one part of my body, and I missed the freedom of movement which had always come so easily.

In rehab I started riding a stationary bike and after rehab I took spin classes at the gym.  Within a year, I bought a road bike and started riding outside.  In my first year of riding, I completed the local MS 150 road challenge.  Last summer when the two sons (Ben & Caleb) of my good friend, Robert King, rode with BIKEtheUSforMS from Yorktown, VA to San Francisco, CA, I rode with the group for a day and a half when they came thru Charlottesville.  I was so impressed with the people I met, the community they had formed, and the common goal to which they had dedicated themselves.  Though I didn’t realize it at the time, I think the seed for my journey was planted right then.

Riding my bike has done so much more for me than just helping me to recover from my surgery.  Our bodies are meant to move.  They provide us with physical freedom and the foundation for the life we are meant to experience.  I took all of this for granted until I didn’t have it anymore.  I have been lucky!  I have recovered fully and am now setting out to do something that I would never have considered possible if you had asked me three years ago.  Freedom is what this ride is all about for me and for those I am seeking to support.  This is a great cause and a great challenge.  I believe my ride across the US will contribute to a cure for MS.  Please help me to help people with MS to experience freedom of movement again, and the life that flows from it.  Thank you for your support!
