About Kelly Wolf
Bike the US for MS has changed my life!! I am so totally stoked and excited to return for a second year with this amazing organization.
Last year I participated on my first cross-country bike trip on the PacCoast and I haven't been the same since. I biked 1,852 miles down the beautiful and scenic West Coast and I loved it so much that I didn't want the adventure to end. So, I continued onto the Southern Tier as a route leader and traveled another 3,070 miles across the desert and swampland all the way to Florida. It was a life changing journey of both literal and figurative ups and downs.
I climbed up mountains and pushed my body to extremes that I didn't even realize I was capable of. I trained a lot in the months leading up to the trip; knowing that I needed to be at my physical best to be ready for my epic adventure. What I didn't expect was the emotional journey that I was about to embark on and the amazing people I would ride with and meet along the way. I learned so much about myself and my capabilities while I spent hours on end alone with my thoughts while pushing my body to extremes. I also became a member of the BTUSFMS family and although I only spent a few weeks with my fellow cyclists, I instantly felt a connection with them and made friendships that will last a lifetime.
One of the most touching experiences from my months on the road was the sheer number of people I met who knew about the devastating effects of MS. I met random people in parking lots and gas stations who saw the BTUSFMS signs and wanted to know more about the organization and how they could help. It amazed me how many people stopped to tell me about their connection to multiple sclerosis and to thank me for raising money to help find a cure. It was so amazing to have strangers thanking me for my participation in BTUSFMS and the "sacrifice" I was making to help others. I felt inspired by these strangers praising me and realized that I was also inspiring others to push themselves outside of their comfort zone and make a difference.
Participating with BTUSFMS allowed me to help spread awareness about multiple sclerosis and to inspire and be inspired along the way. Over the years, I have participated in many fundraisers for several different charities, but this was the first time that I actually got to see the impact of the money I helped raise. The service projects that we completed along the way were a great way to help someone who lives with MS and make a huge impact in their life in just a few short hours. It was also a way to learn more about the daily struggles of living with MS which helped to put all my physical aches and pains in perspective. The many people I met who live every day dealing with the pain and discomfort of MS helped inspire me when I felt like I couldn't bike another mile. Life isn't always easy, but as Kelly Clarkson says, “what doesn't kill you makes you stronger.”
Bike the US for the MS is so much more than a bike ride. It is an emotional and inspirational journey that touches lives and inspires people and I am so proud to be a part of this amazing organization.
