About Caleb King
Howdy! Thanks for visiting! For those of you that don't already know me, my name's Caleb and I live in Richmond, Virginia. I started cycling after graduating from the University of Virginia in 2005 when I finally realized just how much fun riding a bike can be. Biking became a constant in my life as I spent a couple of years moving around the country, always with bike in car, first to Montana and then to West Texas, before settling in Richmond, Virginia to go back to school in 2007. Since then my stable of bikes has expanded to allow me to roll over just about any type of terrain, and I've had a lot of fun racing cyclocross for Virginia Commonwealth University, where I've been attending class to finish up some pre-requisites for medical school. Last fall, my little brother asked me whether I'd like to ride across the country with him and some other folks to raise money for MS research and, well, I'll just say its one of the quickest decisions I've ever made. Now I'm anxiously awaiting our epic cross country trip, trying to decide on a good saddle to ride 3000+ miles on, and attempting to plan for the future, which hopefully will include going to medical school this fall.
But enough about me! You're here because you want to help support the research of multiple sclerosis, an autoimmune disease that attacks the myelin sheaths that surround much of the nervous tissue in the central nervous system. Myelin increases the speed at which nerve impulses are conducted, and its absence can lead to the symptoms of MS, which include (but aren't limited to) weakness, visual disturbances, and mental changes. MS affects around 400,000 people in the US, yet there are many aspects of the disease that remain shrouded in mystery. For instance, it is much more common in females, and is about 5 times more common in people who grow up in temperate areas, yet it is unclear why. How and why the disease spreads are also questions that continue to elude researchers, and these are the questions that your contributions will help answer. All of the money raised by Bike the US for MS will go to support the James Q. Miller Multiple Sclerosis clinic in Charlottesville, VA, which has been investigating the disease and helping those affected by it since 2000. We will be visiting the clinic early in our tour, as well as making stops throughout the journey in order to help folks with MS out that might need an extra hand, and generally trying to raise awareness of the disease on our way across the country. With our time and your generous and tax-deductible contributions, we can help in the fight against this disease and hopefully make the lives of those living with MS little bit better. Again, thanks for visiting!
