About Sherry Dire
Dreams, we all have them. Some dreams are not realistically obtainable but remain beautiful images in our minds. Some dreams get destroyed by the ugliness of life and are lost. There are other dreams that burst forth in our hearts, inspire hope, and stir our souls. I have such dreams and I intend to chase after them.
"If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours." Henry David Thoreau
I have been chasing one of my dreams for the last few years. After becoming a single mom when my children were 1, 3, and 14 years old, I knew that I needed to finish the college degree that I had began working on years before. So while adversity was at every corner and late nights studying took their toll, I kept chasing…and now, this year I will graduate with my Bachelor’s degree! Thank you to all of you who prayed for me and helped me along the way, I could not have done it without you.
I am celebrating my accomplishment by chasing yet another dream. Many, many, years ago I read the book A Walk Across America by Peter Jenkins and since that time have dreamed of having a cross-country adventure of my own.
For 3,785 miles, from Virginia to California, I will be combining my love of cycling and adventure with my desire to play a part in helping others attain their own dreams. Over 2.5 million people are affected with Multiple Sclerosis, each of them has dreams of affordable treatments and a cure.
The trip will take 60 days of cycling an average of 65 miles per day. We will be camping for the most part but will have a few hotels stays along the way. Each rider is responsible for his or her own food and travel cost as well. I am pointing that out to let you know that most of the funds raised go directly to benefit those living with MS.
One of my teammates on the ride, Marlene Callahan, is herself living with MS. Another rider, Jennifer Cherry, is grieving the very recent passing of her mother who suffered with MS. It will be an honor and an inspiration riding with them.
Please consider giving me the best graduation present I can think of by donating money toward Bike the US for MS. I am working to raise the required $1 for every mile I ride ($3785). This non-profit has a track record of spending 90 cents of every dollar directly toward treatment, research, and home improvements for MS patients!!! Our team will also have the joy of making several stops along the way to do service projects at the homes of patients who have MS. How awesome is that?!!!
I cannot end this without acknowledging the man who is lovingly and unselfishly encouraging me to attain my dreams. Jim Dire, you are an amazing husband and I apologize in advance that I will miss our first wedding anniversary on June 25th!
"Vision without action is merely a dream. Action without vision just passes the time. Vision with action can change the world." Joel Barker
