About Eric Vander Lee
My name is Eric Vander Lee. I'm 19 years old and I come from Sioux Falls, South Dakota. I'm an undergraduate sophomore at Augustana College working hard for a double major in Nursing and Spanish. My hobbies include swimming, hiking, biking, running, traveling, meeting new people, being outside, reading, and smiling because I’m alive to do it all. :)
I’ve got some exciting news! This summer, I’ll be crossing the United States by bicycle with an amazing group of people for the benefit of MS research and patient care. To make this work, I’ve pledged to fundraise a dollar for every mile that I pedal. And that makes my goal $4,295. As we travel from Maine to Washington, we’ll also be stopping in various cities to do service projects to help support people living and struggling with MS. The journey will be long and hard, but what we accomplish along the way will be incredible and life changing for many. Ultimately, we’re riding for a cure. But, until we find one, people all over the country are still in need of our support and care.
I decided to dedicate myself to this journey for a couple of reasons. For one, a biking trip across my beautiful country has been a long time dream of mine. But more importantly, I'm passionate about taking personal action to help those in need. I recently read an incredible book called “Blindsided: Lifting a Life Above Illness: A Reluctant Memoir” by Richard Cohen. Before reading the book, my main exposure to MS had come from the lecture hall. And I’ll be the first to admit, my emotions were rarely moved by the textbook presentation. But Cohen’s book shocked me by allowing me to experience the disease on a very personal and troubling level. In the end, I decided to combine my passion for both cycling and fighting MS by joining this great team of cyclists. I’m honored to call myself a member of the team.
It's worth your time and effort to join me in my fight to support those suffering from MS. As of now, as I mentioned earlier, the disease has no cure. However, recent research has made promising advances in bettering our understanding of the disease. So If you are willing and able, please consider supporting my journey. Anything you can give is greatly appreciated.
