About Angela Taylor
Hello all, thanks for taking the time to read about my ambitious goal to bike the U.S. for MS in June and July of 2015.
A little about me:
I have lived in New York City for the past 7 years and currently work as a bike messenger, where I brave the city streets 5 days a week – and I freaking love every minute of it. I also work part time at Jivamukti Yoga School in Union Square, where I am able to practice and work with some amazing spiritual, as well as eco-conscious people.
When I am not working I can be found riding my bike in organized events, including races with Century Road Club Association; century tours (100 miles) with Transit Alternatives and New York Cycling Club, among others; and most recently training for cyclo-cross races. Other activities include, hiking and camping with friends and family, surfing, running (usually for charity events), and practicing yoga.
I received a degree from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington in History, and still have a passion for the subject and spend my quiet time reading historical biographies and watching documentaries. Typically curled up with my dogs!
What is MS?
Multiple Sclerosis is a chronic, and often disabling disease that attacks the central nervous system. Symptoms of MS vary from mild numbness of the extremities, to severe paralysis or loss of vision. The progress and severity varies from person to person.
My first understanding of what MS was and the effects it had on individuals came while in college, where I met this amazing and outgoing guy who was the life of every party or gathering. Over time he shared with me his experiences and difficulties in dealing with his symptoms from MS; and making him and others laugh was his way of coping. Sadly, he passed away while still in school, but I will always remember the crazy road trips and adventures we had together. Since then, I have had new friends come into my life who have this disease, so when I bike the U.S. I not only do it for myself – I do it for them!
I completed my first athletic fundraiser 12 years ago. Since that first amazing experience, I typically do a couple events each year. I have had the honor of completing a few NYC MS rides with the NYSE (New York Stock Exchange) team. When I discovered the TransAm (3,785 mile) ride, I knew immediately it would be an incredible opportunity to combine one of my passions and also a great way to spread awareness for MS organizations across the country. Thus here I am today, asking for your support to help me reach my goal of raising a minimum of $1 per mile ($3,785.00).
