About Nghi Lam

Hello world!

My name is Nghi and I'm ecstatic to be officially joining the 2015 Bike the US for MS TransAm team. So a little bit about myself? I enjoy the outdoors tremendously and will spend time outside in nature as much as my real world commitments will allow me. As an avid cyclist, I have competed in multiple collegiate and amateur races, but lately have transitioned to mostly triathlon races. I enjoy the thrill and freedom of running, training to compete in various half-marathon and marathon distance races. Traveling the world has been one of my passions and from that, my love for photography developed. I now do various forms of photography as a hobby.

What is multiple sclerosis?

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic and unpredictable, often disabling disease that attacks the central nervous system (CNS). Symptoms may be mild, such as numbness in the limbs, or severe, such as paralysis or loss of vision. Today, new treatments and advances in research are giving hope to people affected by the disease. There are approximately 400,000 people affected by MS in the United States currently, with 200 more people diagnosed every week. On an international scale, approximately 2.5 million people are estimated to be affected by MS. While the disease is not contagious or directly inherited, epidemiologists have identified factors in the distribution of MS around the world that may eventually help determine what causes the disease. These factors include gender, genetics, age, geography, and ethnic background. MS is significantly more common in women than men. MS is not directly inherited, but genetics play an important role in who gets the disease.

Why am I riding across the US for MS?

While I do not personally know anyone affected by MS, I have had friends who have individuals close to them affected by MS. Through my education, I have been familiarized with the impact that MS can have on patients, their families, and friends. With a team of dedicated individuals committed to fighting MS, we will be biking across the United States in honor of those affected by MS. Our journey will span 3,785 miles, starting from Yorktown, VA and concluding in San Francisco, CA. Along the way, we will be performing numerous community projects for individuals affected by MS.

Where do YOU come in?

In preparation for my bike trek across the United States, I have pledged to raise a minimum of $1 for every mile that we travel. Therefore, by June 1, I am seeking to raise at least $3,785, with an ultimate goal of $5,000, for the fight against MS. I invite you to be a part of my fundraising goal. No pledge or support is too small!! Please consider contributing a gift to this extraordinary organization and their mission. Bike the US for MS is a 501(c)3 tax exempt organization and all charitable donations are tax deductible. The funds that are raised directly help support the James Q. Miller Multiple Sclerosis clinic in Charlottesville, VA and MS research.

If you would like to make a donation by check, please mail it to the following address and include “Nghi Lam” in the memo line:
