About Owen Wells
First, without naming every single person and organization who has contributed to either MS treatment research, MS cure research or to just helped someone with MS be able to live a more satisfying and full life, thank you. You see, I am one of the people you have helped. I have MS.
To make a really long story short, I was diagnosed with MS in March of 2009. So far, with the help of Copaxone, one of the treatments developed, the MS has primarily affected the vision in my right eye, some numbness/tingling on the right side of my face and some balance issues. Fatigue can set in from time to time and, boy, the headaches.
After lots of research, reading and discussions with people, I found out that one of the best things I could do for myself was to keep a positive attitude. So, I started riding a new trike I purchased to work. 10 miles round trip. Not bad for an old, overweight guy. Was there more that I could do?
During a business meeting, I happened to overhear one of our vendors talking about "BikeMS". Another long story short, in 2013, I participated in my first BikeMS event. In 2014, while holding a fundraiser for that year's event, I happened across someone that put me in touch with "Bike the US for MS". Never one to walk away from a challenge I signed up for the Virginia segment of the 2015 TransAm route.
Me helping myself is why I cycle. Me helping others like me is why I participated in BikeMS for 2 years. Me helping my neighbors is why I am participating in this Bike the US for MS event.
You see, MS is an autoimmune system disorder that causes it to attack the coating(Myelin) of your nerves. There are some theories why and some treatments but no cures. You can have one episode, never know you have it and it never happens again. You can also have episode after worsening episode till you are wheelchair bound, or worse, in a very short time.
While I am physically able, I am going to make a difference in my life and the lives of my fellow MS sufferers.
I do this ride to help me. I do this ride with the hopes that you will help me help others.
