Fundraising
Don't be intimidated. We have helped hundreds of cyclists reach their goals, and you will too!
The fundraising minimum is $5,675 for Cross Country trips, $3,750 for Coastal adventures, and less for our short term trips. Looking to ride a segment? In that case your minimum will reflect the distance you're covering multiplied by the per mile fundraising target for the route you're taking.
Don't forget all overnight accommodations, tires and tubes, maps, team apparel, support vehicles, route leaders, minor bike maintenance and some team meals are all covered by your fundraising. You only need to cover travel to and from the trip and food during the ride.
Overnights
This is a supported bike tour where camping and teamwork are embraced
In order to donate more of your hard earned fundraising, we stay in city parks, state parks, national parks, churches, fire stations, college dorms, community centers, hostels and the occasional shared hotel room. One night in a hotel for the team adds up and can quickly be enough money to build a ramp for someone with MS so we aim to keep these to a minimum.
You are always welcome to pay out-of-pocket for a hotel room even when the team has other accommodations lined up that evening, but require you to be self sufficient with getting you and your equipment too and from the hotel. If luxury is what you seek, there may be better tour options for you.
Support
Bike the US for MS teams are working together to bike across the United States and fundraise for multiple sclerosis.
You will be provided the resources, framework, and support to reach this goal. Your gear will be carried by support vehicles, your volunteer route leaders will be there to help you along the way, and help keep you and your bike rolling with minor repairs, water stops will be set up every 20-30 miles, nightly accommodations will be booked, but the pedaling is up to you!
What do I need to do?
Besides fundraising, there are a few other boxes to tick before the ride.
Training
You must have ridden at least 500 miles on the bike you plan to ride, including back to back 50 mile rides, at least one day over 60 miles, and being comfortable riding in all weather conditions including wet weather riding.
Camping Gear
Home away from home! Be prepared with a solid water proof tent, warm sleeping bag, inflatable sleeping pad, and cooking equipment. The last thing you want is to be wet, cold, and hungry before a long riding day.
Travel Plans
Arrange transport to the start and away from the finish of the adventure. Remember, there will be a mandatory team orientation at 2pm the day before you start riding. Don't forget to plan for traveling with your bike!
Service Projects
Have an impact on the communities we ride through
On route, you'll have the privilege of meeting many community members and amazing local families. The team will complete volunteer service projects on our rest days and make worthwhile donations to MS treatment and research clinics across the country with your fundraising efforts.
Whether you have a connection to MS or not before the trip begins, once it is complete you will. You will see the impact of your service and your fundraising.
Safety
Your safety is our number one priority!
Some of our non-negotiables include wearing a helmet at all times while on your bike, having a mirror installed on your bike or helmet, have a rear flashing and front light on at all times, and you must stay on the designated route. We have few hard rules on the trips, and safety rules are not negotiable.
Used to riding by yourself? We keep our riding groups small and we do not ride in large pelotons, but it's worth brushing up on group riding skills before the adventure to safely benefit from riding with others in tough conditions!
Worried about navigation?
Fear not! You will be following bespoke cycling maps specifically for your route. They are created by Adventure Cycling Association who have been mapping out safe bike routes across America for decades. All you’ll need is a simple bike computer that records your speed and distance to know when the turns are coming up!
Got a smart bike computer? There are options to download the route GPX files too!
